Can i plant leyland cypress buds ?

in our local park are these large christmas type trees....... after hours of searching i think these trees are called leyland cypress.... anyways they have at the tips of the branches little tiny green cabbage like buds :) anyways i've pulled tons off an buried them in my garden along my fence..... WILL THESE LITTLE CABBAGES GROW INTO TREES ????
