Scale and polish why so expensive?

why is it so expensive here in the UK to have a proper dental care. I paid �70 for mine but my mum only paid �16 on a different dentist. I watched this documentary in dispatches and yes I was a victim! I don't go to my dentist anymore although, I'm prone to gingivitis. :(
